Better than Aflac

It's true.

We really do come to life when you are:

a) asleep
b) on loopy-loo medicine that makes you hallucinate
c) when you leave the house
d) all of the above

Let me properly introduce myself.

My name is British Rubber Ducky. Yes, that is as creative as they got here in the Jeans Household. Well, thats CAPTAIN British Ducky to you, since I've taken command of the premises.

I've taken it upon myself to round up the troops around here--as it seems our Commander and Chief Master O-man and the Lady JJ have been quite under the weather the past few days. No worries, I am in constant communication with Mr. Mook while he is away on business, keeping him posted on the most up to date information.

As you can see, I have charged Rowdy the Garbage Truck to do what he does best.

Goodness knows there have been plenty of those to clean up. Would you believe me if I told you Lady JJ and Master O-man have gone through two big boxes of tissues the past few days? That's a lot of snot.

So obviously with all that snot, we need to keep things as clean as possible--avoid spreading even more germs. Our newcomer, Grow-Bot, has been happy to keep us on a very strict disinfecting schedule.

Don't plan on passing him by without getting a squirt! Sometimes he gets a little overzealous with the dispensing.  We've unfortunately been unable to keep the large brown four-legged-creature that roams the house from licking up any leftovers. It doesn't seem to mind though...

And what is an important ingredient of getting back to good health? A well balanced meal, of course!

Chef Scout has done an excellent job keeping Lady JJ and Master O-man well-fed. Warm meals, and keeping them hydrated with water, green tea and milk.

I've also made sure that those pesky every-day tasks have been taken care of, as well.

Spot has taken care of e-mail correspondence, paying bills online and updating us on any current news. He's really enjoyed keeping track and reporting all of the Olympic results--the athletes seem to only ever win an A, B or C though.....

And lastly, Learning Puppy has been assigned the task to clean up around the house--dusting, running the vacuum. Not too much to ask, right? Well, he has quite the mouth on him. Every time he touches something, he says "Haaannnnd" How disrespectful to tell me to talk to the hand!
So I gave him time out.

As you can see, he used his time-out very wisely. He made sure to check and make sure all of Lady JJ's shows were recording on the DVR. It was hard to get him out of time-out since he became quite interested in some show about oranges, rich women and plastic surgery? Why anyone would watch that is a mystery to me.

So rest assurred that me and my team have it all under control! While we wish Master O-man and Lady JJ would get better soon, I think we could get used to this....

*Can you tell I had one straaaaaaange dream? Silly cold meds.*

Brought to you by the Great Blog Cross Pollination: Transitions

As part of the Great Blog Cross Pollination, a wonderful mystery blogger
has taken over the Jeans blog today!
Enjoy her post, and see further details at the bottom of the post!

---------------------------

Five months into motherhood and my mind is still stuck in IF land. Transitioning to a 'motherhood after IF' blog has been challenging. IF shaped me into the woman I am today. It taught me to be a better wife; a better communicator. It taught me to not take life for granted. It's time I put that behind me and focus my energy (what little I have) on exploring the life of a blogging mama.

Over the past couple of months I've considered taking a blog hiatus. I've even started a post about it. Apparently I have more to say because I haven't finished it. This community supported me when I had no one else to turn to. And now, as I'm off on this new adventure, I'm going to need all the help I can get! Hopefully I'll be able to return the favor and offer support to those still working towards building a family

I've been a "mama" for a while. Not technically a human baby mama, but just as important. (In my humble opinion.) My first nephew/Godson was born eight years ago. I experienced many firsts with him. He lives next door and I've been blessed to be close to him and watch him grow. A few years later we adopted our furbabies. Some people don't believe that you’re a mom when you have furbabies, but I whole-heartedly disagree. Bringing them to their forever home was life changing! We quickly discovered that we need them more than they need us. They taught us how to love unconditionally and to not take life so seriously. They greeted us at the end of each day to soothe our sorrow and mend our hearts. So, you see, my transition into motherhood has been a gradual one. My blog is still just trying to catch up.

When I started blogging I was eager to grow and learn from each post I wrote. I wanted to expand my knowledge of IF as a woman in a MFI marriage, and most importantly find peace with the challenge we were facing. I've mostly written about our struggles. My tone has been serious and sorrowful. It doesn't reflect my personality at all.

As a wise blogger (insert hyperlink: http://i-cant-whistle.blogspot.com/2009/12/rainbow.html) recently said, many new IF moms and IF pregnant ladies feel like "their lives are lived with one foot in each boat, like each one is somehow not true." I want to start paddling the other boat. I need to let go of the past, focus on parenting, help support those still struggling to build a family and continue to search for serenity in life and motherhood.

Now that I've given myself a pep talk, I guess this is the time. Time for a fresh start. Time to revamp my blog and start writing about my life as a new mama.

Strapping on my life jacket and starting up the motor!

Sibling Rivalry

Today, I have the great honor to be writing a guest post for the lovely, Lavender Luz on her blog, Weebles Wobblog .

When she extended the opportunity to write on her inspiring blog, I jumped at the opportunity--and knew it was the perfect time to bring some feelings to the surface that have been boiling for a while.

I'd love it if you did a hop-skip-and-a-jump over to read all about: Sibling Rivalry.

Laugh, And The World Laughs With You; Vomit, And The Internet Holds Your Hair

I feel like I'm at the Academy Awards about to introduce the Best Actress winner...shaky, sweaty palms included! I am so privileged to have the wonderfully witty Aunt Becky of Mommy Wants Vodka, guest-posting for me today. Please make her feel welcome...
and I'm sure she'll share some of her vodka.

The Jeans and The Vodka: a stylish, yummy combination.

I started blogging sometime in 2004 (incidentally around the same time as Dooce did. But she makes trillions and I get occasional paychecks for my ads that read something like so-and-so measly dollars, so you can see which of us is The Smart One) after my then-boyfriend suggested that I start one. I had a stalker, you see, which sounds far more intriguing than it actually was, and he thought that the Stalker Chronicles would make for great blogging material. They would have, had I started it when he suggested. But no, I was not enough of a writer to imagine that anyone would want to read my drivel so I put it off until a good friend of mine and I started a co-blog. The purpose of that blog was to shock and entertain in a I-Can't-Believe-She's-Saying-That sort of way and it wasn't read anywhere beyond the small circle of bloggers I know (read: about 3.4 people).

But in 2007 my second son, Alex, was born. I'd been laid up most of my pregnancy, sick as a dog, and had somehow stumbled into the land of infertility blogs and mothering-after-infertility blogs and began to read them (I know, you all thought I started reading Mommy Blogs). While I struggled on through Motherhood x 2 with a child who earned the nickname Devil-Baby, my blog was notoriously silent when I'd post about what I'd gone through just to make it through each day. These are the breaks when your readers don't have kids, don't want kids, and don't want to hear how many centimeters dilated you were (also: should they care?). I noticed something shocking, though, among the infertility blogs I read: everyone supported each other. It was the strangest thing to me, because I only tended to garner comments when I would write a funny blog.

So after some hemming and hawing (read: deciding what the hell to call my blog), I had my-former-blog-suggesting-boyfriend-turned-husband The Daver set me up with Blog #2. Mommy Wants Vodka. I became Aunt Becky, wrote daily, filling page after page with the drivel that my readers now know well. I wrote far more than I'd thought I had in me and realized that after all of my science training I am a writer at heart. This was a shocking realization as the time that after years of dying it shades of brown I realized that my hair is indeed black. At first, of course, no one came. It's not like The Internet sends out an email to prospective readers and tells them all about this new-fangled blog and boy, oh boy, should you take a look-see or what? I did what every blogger (and reader) that wants to connect with another blogger does: I commented until my fingers bled.

After a couple of months, I began to see a stray new reader here and there—I'd kept the readers I'd gotten at my first blog, some might say it was because I paid them, a charge I would heartily deny—and I made sure that no matter who it was, once they became a reader of mine, I was a faithful reader of theirs. I'll never forget the first time someone who hadn't ever laid eyes on my cat-hair covered sweatpants linked to me (Niobe from dead baby jokes). I may have shed a tear or two. Someone noticed me (after months of virtually stalking them) and deemed me worth linking to! It sounds so stupid, but I finally felt like I was no longer on the outside looking in.

--------------

I met JJ, well, I don't really remember when I met her: I feel like I've always known her, which is entirely possible. We've been blogging about the same amount of time. I was touched when she chose to keep up with me, and sooner than I could have imagined it, I got pregnant again. Knowing how hard it is for my infertile friends to read about pregnancy, I assumed that I'd lose a significant chunk of readers. Somehow, I didn't. JJ got pregnant with her son a couple of weeks after I got pregnant with my daughter and an instant Love Match was made.

My daughter Amelia (O-man's girlfriend, natch) was born first on January 28, and although we hadn't known that she had any problems, we found out while I was delivering her that she had what appeared to be a boggy rotten spot on the back of her head. The adjectives “boggy,” “rotten,” or “spot” aren't really the ones you want to use when referring to your daughter, similar to how you don't want to use the phrase “most recent colonscopy” in reference to yourself. A Cat Scan the following morning showed the worst: some bright spots (apparently not diamonds OR platinum, either of which would have been okay with me) and she was whisked down to the NICU for observation until a pediatric neurosurgeon could assess her.

After much teeth gnashing (me), about 4 trillion doctors appointments (her), and a couple of nervous breakdowns (me), a month almost to the day after she was born, my daughter went in for brain surgery. The pathology confirmed what the neurosurgeon suspected: Amelia had been born with a parietal encephalocele. I'll save you from googling that: when she was an embryo, something happened and the bones to her skull didn't fuse properly and some brain tissue began to grow outside of her skull (again: “brain tissue outside of her skull” is another one of those terms you never want to use). It's a big effing deal, and although she appears to be just fine we're being closely monitored by a number of teams of specialists.

But I'm sitting here, writing this to you and not laying somewhere, melted into a big pile of goo. I've made it through some of my own personal darkest days and nights and although I've noticed an increase in my White Hair Count (could that be from the lack of hair dye? I just don't know), I'm not hugely worse for the wear. Different person, yes I am, but not a worse person.

I've made it through and out the other side with the help and support from my friends in the computer. It sounds trite, I know, especially to someone who isn't part of this community, but each time I'd update my blog, the support pouring in was overwhelming. I'd get emails, phone calls, comments and the prayers of people I didn't even know. The morning of February 26, we had to leave our daughter with the anesthetist—easily the most gut-wrenching thing I've been through—to undergo brain surgery The Internet propped me up. They propped me up, dusted me off, gave me a big hug and told me that they cared.

I can't explain how much that helped without using phrases like “power of prayer” and “on the wings of love” or even maybe “livin' on a prayer” (okay, so not that one). It was often intangible, sometimes very tangible (especially Stef, who sent me vodka and chocolate. Which, awesome), but never failed to remind me that I was not alone. I honestly, in my heart of hearts, don't know how I could have done any of it without my Internet Friends. I really don't.

And to each and every one of you, some of whom I know, some of whom I don't, if I haven't said it before or often enough, let me say it again. Thank you. Just, thank you.

---------

JJ is, of course, one of my favorite Internet Friends and I'm more than honored to be here, guest posting on her blog for her. She's been a friend through my whole journey and I like to think (wishfully? fishfully?) that I've been as good a friend to her too. The one thing that I'm annoyed about and hoping that you over here, JJ's Internet, can help me rectify is this: I didn't think to nominate her for the Best Health Blog in the bloggers choice awards, a title she completely deserves. Thankfully, her husband Mook did. But she's losing to some less-than-worthy blogs.

This, JJ's Internet, is where you come in. She's your friend and she deserves this award. Go vote for her. While I've heard some people whine about it, the registration process is pretty simple.

My site was nominated for Best Health Blog!

I live in Chicago where the motto is “vote early, vote often” (also a motto: We Arrest Our Governors), so go make JJ and her Aunt Becky proud.

Horizontal Happenings

Hi everyone, it's Bee Cee again* with the latest update on our friend JJ.

First of all, just to put your mind at rest, everything is ok, but there's a bit of an update that JJ wanted you all to hear.

Yesterday she text me and part of it said this:

"Not doing well today, saw red blood, so I am flat on my back".

I could tell in her tone that she was really worried. Poor girl, this thing is never ending for her. I wish someone would give her a break, so she could enjoy (if that's possible) her pregnancy.

Latest update today was better news:

"Was in the ER this morning, all is ok but I'm just so frustrated".

I knew she was doing better as she put kisses on the text this time! Knowing her as I 'think' I do, she will be relieved everything is ok with the wonderboy Ron, but she will still be very worried.

So, please send through any happy vibes for JJ, I am sure she will be thrilled to hear from you all when she's up to using the internet.

That's all for now. I've been Bee Cee your guest blogger for the day, hopefully JJ will back soon with the latest installment of Ron's adventures in wonderland.

* bet you all dread seeing my blasted name on a post....please don't think I am a doom and gloomer! Hopefully, the next time I will be back is to announce the safe arrival of JJ and Mook's baby.

An Alien Has Landed...

....and I am the alien. This is not JJ and not even Mook. My name is Bee Cee and I have kidnapped JJ’s blog for the day. Some of you may know me but most of you don’t. I can be found here, on my blog, on most days, but for today, I am privileged and honoured to be writing for the Reproductive Jeans family.

JJ asked me to update you all as there has been a lot going on recently in her special corner of the world.

Ok before I start, you may need a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, but most of all a big fat listening ear...and get ready because there’s a quiz at the end that you all have to answer, as JJ needs your help.

Here we go....

For the 4th of July weekend, Mook and JJ packed their bags and headed for the beach with JJ’s family. She arranged to have Monday as holiday too so it was a nice long weekend break away from work.

All was going swimmingly until Sunday night. She had two gushes of blood and was rushed to the ER. This was made worse by the fact she was miles away from home but she had all her family with her which was a comfort. I don’t think it is an understatement to say that JJ thought it was all over at this point.

She spent most of the night in the ER. They did an ultrasound, pelvic exam and blood culture. The great bit was she got to see Ron! It was amazing I am sure. The ultrasound lady couldn’t see any free fluid or blood but did see JJ’s cysts and what she ‘thought’ was a fibroid. The outcome was that the pelvic exam didn’t throw up any answers and her cervix was closed so the doctor sent her packing after concluding that it was an old blood pocket.

They stayed at the beach until Monday afternoon and then headed home. When JJ got home she went to the restroom and was horrified to see even more blood. A nightmare restless night followed with nothing else to do but wait until her clinic opened in the morning. I can’t imagine what was going through her head this time, just awful. She described it as the “longest night of her life”.

Tuesday morning brought a visit to the clinic. Hearts must have been racing at this point but JJ’s nurse looked after her so well and arranged for an ultrasound and blood work straight away. There was another racing heartbeat next, and it wasn’t JJ’s or Mook’s, it was Ron’s at 5w 6d!! Fantastic.

Then the scan showed a large “something”. That something turns out to be a Subchorionic Hemorrhage. The good news was that it wasn’t attached to the sack, but it is very very close so obviously is a worry. JJ says it will either dissolve or come out by itself; I am rooting for the former.

She is on strict bedrest until at least Friday when the next scan happens and then another on Monday. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed for her and Mook and Ron. She is bearing up well, naturally scared but just hoping it will all resolve itself soon.

So now for the quiz....have any of you got words of wisdom relating to Subchorionic Hemorrhages? Any happy ever after stories are gratefully received. Words of comfort are welcome too, as she will be reading this from her bed.

Well, thanks for listening all, I have been Bee Cee your Reproductive Jeans guest blogger, I hope to be back one day, but next time I hope it will be with better news.
