Sing it like Madonna

For those of you who didn't see my glorious twitter-fest this morning, here's the scoop. I'm borderline. Thank goodness it is in the pass side of borderline. The nurse was comfortable enough to pass me-because the numbers were in range--but only slightly. I don't know, and didn't ask, how much weight those few points carry. I'm expecting to hear from my doctor if he either a) wants me to repeat the test; b) go ahead and treat it as gestational diabetes or c) just leave it alone! Also, they reaffirmed what I forgot to mention yesterday-my iron is low. Add those supplements to my list!

Honestly, I just didn't imagine having to deal with this. I still don't know if I did anything to cause this (nurse says no) but of course I analyze everything I have put in my tum up to this point. And to think I was being scolded about not eating enough at the beginning. And I still don't feel my eating habits are terrible. *Sigh....

Plus, I used to really love Sunkist...but I don't think I'll be grabbing one of those anytime soon after consuming over 18 oz of overly sugary-orange goo.

What happened to the pipe dream of ice cream and pickles whenever you damn well felt like it! :0)

Edited to add:
I would love to take the exercise/walking option into play for keeping this at bay, buuuuut due to the previa, all exercise is o-u-t, out. Maybe I can just do arm type exercises on the couch--at least to get my blood pumping?

  1. Mmm pickles.

Pass the iron, sister, it does a body good. :) I got this 100-count bottle of iron last week and I was just counting my blessings that I would only have to buy one bottle of iron supplements... the days are numbered. :)

  2. I don't know if they told you this, but get the SLOW FE brand of iron. It helps with constipation issues and I haven't seemed to have too much trouble yet. Although, I did buy some metamucil to have on hand just in case!

I will have my fingers crossed for the 3rd option. Don't feel like any of this is your fault. My next door neighbor is a disgustingly fit BOOT CAMP INSTRUCTOR and she was diagnosed with GD after eating nothing but fruit, veggies and lean meats her entire pregnancy. It is just the way it is in some pregnancies.
    *hugs*

  3. Hoping the doc chooses option 3. You've got enough on your plate, my friend.

  4. I agree... sure hope they say it's fine at those numbers! :) Then, you can still get the milkshake-in-the-shower thing down!

So, then, no news is good news, right?

Looking forward to chatting... ya free tonight? I start my PIO tomorrow morning. Only 0.5cc. Hope it goes well!!

  5. Now that Madonna is stuck in my head, I'll have to agree with everyone else an pick door C. No need to add anything else onto your plate right now

  6. I'm glad it was on the good side! Wishing you good thoughts that it stays there and you don't have to deal with anything else. I agree about the orange syrup! :)

  8. Ooooh Picklyes sound so good! From the FAIR!

    Mmmm, pickle chips even.

    And I'm not even pg!

I'm glad you passed, at least!! It's not your fault, I'm sure. Just go with it from here on out is the best you can do!

    Good luck!

  9. I'm so glad you passed... I hope it stays that way!

  10. Hope the doc thinks you can go with option 3. Even if he doesn't considering its borderline a few dietary changes will probably do the trick and hopefully you wont need meds to treat it. Keep us posted.

  11. It has NOTHING to do with what you did or didn't eat. I felt the same way -- I felt such terribe guilt, because I was trying to do everything I could to have a healthy pregnancy. It's just that your pancreas can't keep up with the demands of the placenta, at this point. The best tips that helped me keep my numbers in the nice and normal range:

    1) Always pair protein with carbs. Don't eat carbs alone. Carbs alone cause more of a spike than carbs with protein. String cheese was my friend.

    2) Go for a walk after you eat. Exercise helps the body process blood sugar.

  12. My sister had GD (which they didn't tell her was Borderline until after she had given birth!) and says the best thing about it was 1/2 cup of ice cream every day. I don't think dill pickles are prohibited either. But, the Sunkist will probably be a big no-no...good luck with the Dr.

  13. Don't blame yourself. Blame your placenta (first previa, now this...why won't it behave!?). When I went over my 3 hr glucose results with my OB, she explained to me that the hormones a placenta can increase the mother's resistance to insulin. That's why most of the time it goes away after birth--no more placenta.

Was you fasting level a good number? My OB said that if that level was not within the normal range, then she would have been more worried about my numbers (I had one abnormal level out of the 4 and she said two abnormal levels is considered GD).

  14. Well, personallly, I think they should just pass you and get on with it. :) How sucky is it that you had to drink that stuff for two days!! Blech. I too am a Sunkist lover and I believe I had a very similar conversation with my hubby yesterday about not really wanting to touch the stuff for quite some time despite my normal routine of wanting more than one bottle at a time.

It seems that we are both lacking in the iron department as well and must now take those lovely constipation causing supplements 2 times a day.

I am missing out on the whole exercise thing too what with pending preterm labor and all. I have often thought of what kind of arm exercises I can do from the sitting or laying position and I have come up with quite a few. None of which a trainer would approve of I am sure, but they make me feel better none the less.

Thanks for finding me. It is nice to go through this stuff with someone else. My fingers are crossed for the A-OK from the doc!!

  15. I hope you don't have to redo the test. Once (or really twice) is enough! I second the Slow FE for iron recommendation. Although I've been taking Benefiber and Colace my whole pregnancy, so I'll just say I didn't notice any difference adding in the Slow FE.

  16. a half-frozen kosher dill sounds really good to me right now. Hopefully the doctor goes with #3.

  17. I also second the suggestion for SlowFE. In fact, I may have part of a box left if you want me to check, since I did have the baby early.

And the nurse is right- you didn't do ANYTHING to cause the higher glucose levels. It's that darn healthy plump misplaced placenta that's secreting hormones that interferes with insulin receptors. Nothing you could have done to prevent it at all. Trust me, I tried! I'm hoping that you'll just not have to worry about it...

  18. Poor girl! But I will say that picture of Ron is totally adorable. Can't you just imagine holding that sweet little boy....

I wish you didn't have to worry so much, but I completely understand your concerns. I hope your doctor will make things easy on you, but you also want to do what is best for Ron.

Make sure Mook takes care of you through al this.

    Hang in there, girl!

  19. First, good news. As Summer said, placenta produces anti-insulin, peaking in mid-20ies week-wise, which is why that's when you get tested. So not your fault.

Now for the bad news. There was a paper in New England Journal of Medicine this past spring that showed that women who did not meet diagnostic criteria for GD but had impaired glucose tolerance (i.e. elevated numbers, like you and me) still were at an increased risk for all the same complications as women with GD, but at proportionally smaller rate. So it does make sense to work on getting your sugars under control. Sorry...

  20. Just commenting on this post and the one before. So darn sorry that you are dealing with all of this. Sheesh, can a girl get a normal pregnancy over here?!Thinking of you and thank you for the sweet comments about Missy.

  21. Glad to hear they passed you JJ :)

  22. Awww... I didn't get this in time to call. Pretty much just crashed when I got home last night (after the final exam) & was out. I'm sorry! :(

The PIO shot wasn't too bad. It makes me wonder if we're doing it right. But, we're only doing a 1/2mL.

Okay, for real, we will talk soon! LOL I'm a dork!

  23. Yay! I'm happy you passed, even if it's a "borderline" pass.

    ReplyDelete
  24. A pass is a pass. And I hope the Dr. agrees!
And seriously- you did nothing to cause a borderline number. So just let those thoughts go. You are doing great, sweetie.

  25. I am sorry about being borderline. This comes from one who was a definite gestational diabetic. Good thing for me I had blogging buddies that could get me through it and also good nurse nutrionists at my diabetes center. I had one on speed dial and she actually knows the sound of my voice when I was calling in.

  26. A pass is a pass! Wishing you all the best and no more surprises!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ugh. Well, I'm hoping that your doctor doesn't for you to be too restrictive. Both of my sisters had to deal with that and it just wasn't fun. Hoping and praying that it all works out with the doctor--but a pass is a pass! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Iron supplements can cause constipation, which happens a lot during pg anyways. FYI!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Borderline, woo! (Woo for the song AND the test.) I wish you'd passed with flying colors (and I'm sure you do too) but in the absence of that, I'm really glad you didn't fail. I'm crossing my fingers that it's as smooth sailing as it can possibly be from here on out. You're getting closer and closer, JJ. Hang in there! You're doing an amazing job.

  30. Here from Blogger Bingo

I had a previa in two pgs - the second time it moved up; the first time it didn't and I ended up with a preemie. I remember what it was like - feeling much like a ticking time bomb, knowing it could go off in a bloody mess. I am very glad that all turned out well for you. :0)

I hated the GTT - always put me on the floor. If your lab offers different flavors - I found the lemon-lime to be way more palatable. Course, no matter what - it is like drinking straight syrup - YUCK!
